IBM and QNX to Develop Pervasive Computing
Technologies

- Alliance will include collaborative engineering on strategic products and
cross-licensing of advanced technologies -

SAN FRANCISCO, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM Corporation and QNX Software Systems Ltd.
(QSSL) today announced that they will work together to develop technologies for use in a new class
of pervasive computing devices.

As part of a non-exclusive agreement, QSSL will provide IBM with key components of the
QNX(R)/Neutrino(R) realtime operating system (RTOS) for use in pervasive computing devices and
applications. In turn, IBM will provide QSSL with advanced embedded technologies for integration
into the QNX/Neutrino product suite. Both companies also will actively promote the development of
open standard interfaces for embedded products.

''QNX and IBM each are committed to building important components of the pervasive computing
environment,'' said Dan Dodge, vice president of R&D at QNX Software Systems. ''This
partnership supports those commitments through collaborative engineering on strategic products, as
well as through cross- licensing of advanced technologies from each company.''

''It's important for companies such as IBM and QSSL to drive industry-wide adoption of open
standards for the next generation of technologies,'' said Mark Bregman, general manager of IBM's
Pervasive Computing Group. ''Working together, we can help the industry deliver on the full
promise of pervasive computing, making the ability to compute and communicate virtually anytime,
anywhere as natural as turning on a television or picking up the telephone.''

The QNX/Neutrino Realtime Operating System is a scalable, fault-tolerant OS with fully distributed
processing and the industry's most advanced MMU support. A true microkernel operating system,
QNX runs virtually all OS services in separate MMU-protected address spaces to provide
maximum reliability and availability at run time. Applications include telecom/datacom devices,
industrial controllers, office equipment, medical instrumentation, and consumer electronics.
