Semitool is by no means dead. Novellus is a formidable competitor with an outstanding PR machine. Semitool has long experience with wet chemistry, and was first to market with ECD. It's too early to say which one will win, or even that only one of them can be successful. After all, there are multiple stepper, etch, deposition, etc vendors, so why not multiple ECD vendors.

This is pure speculation, but Semitool might also be a candidate for acquisition. All the metal deposition companies are used to working with vacuum, not wet chemistry. It might make sense for one of them to buy copper/ECD expertise, rather than try to build it internally.
