This is the latest USW release, looks like they can't wait to get this internet business going!

U S West Communications to Move Fast After Split From Cable

Denver, June 3 (Bloomberg) -- U S West Communications Group shareholders are expected to approve tomorrow the local phone company's split from its cable-television business, freeing it up to move quickly in the fast-changing telecommunications industry.

The Denver-based Baby Bell said it will now be able to focus on offering new and current customers more than just plain old telephone services. The split will let it build high-growth businesses like data and wireless without waiting for approval from its former parent U S West Inc.

U S West is moving beyond the local business to offer a range of communications services. The company last month quietly filed to get regulatory approval to offer security-monitoring services, and its wireless unit plans to test short messaging and Internet access over wireless phones. U S West will also soon test offering cable-TV-like services over personal computers.

The growth opportunity for us is changing dramatically,'' said Sol Trujillo, chief executive of U S West Communications Group. After the split, ''We have the ability to aggressively pursue our integration strategy.''
