Merced is a very futuristic design to begin with, and to utilize its capabilities a new operating system, new compilers etc. have to be written. In any case, as John Hull pointed out, its not the design or manufacture but rather the test/validation suites and simulation that are holding up the merced volume production. This means that intel can (I hope) produce merced in sample quantities so that uSoft, sunw etc. can start fine turning their new IA64 software that go with it. In short, Merced will be out later but will be a more reliable product AND everyone will be able to take immediate advantage of it.
