Since TLAB's has its own DWDM people, the old IBM division, presumably they were in a position to evaluate this deal correctly.
Ciena's profit margins are even better than TLAB's so that isn't a
problem. This leaves TLAB holding leading positions in digital crossconnect, noise reduction, and DWDM. It also has one of the best
reputations in the biz. Not a bad hand to play.

Still, not everyone is as bullish on the deal. Mike Margolies, head of Avalon Research and a noted Ciena bear, thinks that Ciena's lead in DWDM will quickly evaporate as other players such as Alcatel and Pirelli enter the market. "In six months, it will be a shootout at the OK Corral," he says.

This is the guy that took potshots at CIEN in Barron's a couple months ago. That will teach him to go shorting a company on the cutting edge of the bandwith revolution. Hope he covered in time.
