Netscape and Bay Networks First to Market With Directory-Enabled Networking Products
Bay Networks Licenses Netscape Directory Server to Bundle With Its Products; Joins More Than 25 Vendors Leveraging Netscape Mission Control
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Netscape Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: NSCP - news) and Bay Networks(R), Inc. (NYSE: BAY - news) today announced that the companies plan to deliver the first Directory-Enabled Networking (DEN) solution to the market. DEN revolutionizes networking and lowers cost of ownership for customers by linking administration of network hardware with enterprise-class directory software services. Bay Networks has licensed Netscape(R) Directory Server software and will bundle it with each member of Bay Networks Contivity Extranet Switch product family. Bay Networks joins the list of 25 vendors currently leveraging Netscape Directory Server in their products.
Bay Networks chose Netscape Directory Server software for its Contivity Extranet Switch product line because the software provides the performance and reliability that DEN requires. DEN-enabled products from Bay Networks and Netscape simplify administration by enabling network administrators to make a change in the directory once and have it pushed out automatically to all devices on the network. Providing network administrators with the ability to customize access to the corporate network based on each user's unique profile, Netscape Directory Server can also coordinate the configuration of multiple Contivity Extranet Switches, rather than configuring each switch directly.
''Together, Bay Networks and Netscape are reducing administration costs and providing companies with the ability to tailor 'Extranets' to meet the needs of diverse user populations and partners,'' said Ben Horowitz, vice president of Netscape's Mission Control product line. ''Netscape Directory Server embedded in Bay Networks Contivity Extranet Switches provides the flexibility, scalability and performance that Directory Enabled Networking requires.''
''Three months ago, we introduced the industry's first Directory Enabled Networking product, the Contivity Extranet Switch. We are now excited to be working with Netscape on the delivery of a complete and scalable DEN solution,'' said Tom Pincince, vice president of business development at Bay Networks. ''By bundling the Netscape Directory Server in our Extranet Switches, we are providing an ease of purchase and enhanced value for Bay Networks customers, while keeping them well-positioned for the ongoing roll-out of DEN across the industry.''
Netscape Directory Server software is central to Netscape's Mission Control product family, which provides centralized directory and security for Internet services with greatly reduced cost of ownership for enterprise customers. Netscape Mission Control provides enterprises and independent software vendors (ISVs) with a set of state-of-the-art infrastructure services that simplifies administration and lowers the cost of ownership. Other partners leveraging Netscape Mission Control include Hewlett-Packard, Cabletron Systems, Inc., Hitachi, Ltd., Netegrity, Inc., Novera Software, Inc., Oblix, Inc., Security Dynamics and Silicon Graphics, Inc.
Bay Networks Contivity Extranet Switch product family enables partners and employees to build Extranet/Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for private communication, commerce and collaboration. Bay Networks Contivity Extranet Switch product family includes the Contivity Extranet Switch 4000, 2000 and 1000, each combining market-leading functionality such as support for standard tunneling, authentication, directory, accounting and connectivity protocols, in a single integrated hardware architecture.
