What's the big need to upgrade pentium class machines to pentium II's? Sounds like a huge waste of tax dollars. Can you justify this expense?

You mean INTC at 65 isn't a good enough reason?

That is always a concern, of course. The systems
currently deployed as our 'front line', operational
machines required for real time processing of range
safety and telemetry processing data are consistently
stressed by scientists' needs to collect, process,
and visualize data. The upgrade is expected to
allow a reduction in the total number of machines
and operators (thru the addition of more software
which will automate some (now manual) tasks related
to the operation. The existing machines will
be relegated to other duties which are less demanding
of resources (perhaps desktop and perhaps lower
end processing).

As a civil servant, I appreciate your question and hope
that this helps. It is, believe it or not, the very
question WE ask prior to committing to such a systematic
and large purchase. But we feel that the potential
operational savings and the increased functionality
are worth the cost. Some very low end machines (486s)
will be replaced as the current machines trickle down.

Regards,

J
