Caisson, I think your thoughts were right in line with that of Compaqs management. However, I think they shelved that idea and pre-announced after 3COM got hit with the restatement of the US Robotics merger one time charges which basically did what everyone had been doing before ... writing off bad numbers as part of one time merger costs. Now that these charges are being more rigourously scrutinised, I think Compaq will report a horrible quarter which won't negatively hit the stock price cause of all the 'good news going forward' routine. I expect some bad numbers this qtr ... mostly cause the management are too sharp to chance having to restate later on. Its the best move and management are too sharp to make that mistake. All IMHO

Good luck all

Stephen

Anyone have a date for PC Expo?

Compaq is expected at PC Expo in New York to unveil its plans for the new company and its enterprise strategy. Analysts speculated Intel delay of Merced bodes well for the future of the Alpha processor, which Compaq officials had said was a crucial element of their strategy going forward.

FTC compiles incidents in Intel case

Further complicating the matter was Intel's relationship to Compaq, which at the time was extraordinarily delicate. Compaq had recently chosen Intel adversary Advanced Micro Devices to supply some low-end chips, and Intel had responded by restricting the flow of information about its top-of-the-line Pentium Pro processor to Compaq, sources said.
