Del, I am sure a lot of people are embarrassed about the role of the Vatican in World War II. In my newspaper yesterday, it was discussed on the sixth page, which is at least a semi-prominent place to put it.

You pointed out that the the Vatican-associated College of San Girolamo, which was the recipient of some of the money plundered from the Holocaust victims in Croatia, helped Nazi leaders escape to South America by providing temporary shelter and false identity documents. This hiding by the Vatican of fugitive war criminals happened over a long period of time, required planning and quite a lot of subterfuge, and was obviously very deliberate.

Another part of the article I read dealt with the neutral nations--Sweden, Turkey, Spain and Portugal--who provided ball bearings, high quality iron ore, and tungsten ore without which Germany could not have produced warplanes, submarines, tanks and other arms. These countries sometimes participated reluctantly, and were afraid of being invaded by Germany early in the war. However, they continued to assist the German war effort after the tide had turned against Germany.

In all fairness, however, these countries helped 250,000 Jews, and many other refugees, escape. I was stunned to read in the same article that the United States had one of the wrost records in accepting refugees. We took only 21,000 of them. Why was that? Does anyone know?
