Hi Alex
Mahathir sees talk on single Asia currency 'later'

TOKYO, June 4 (Reuters) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Thursday he
expects ''serious consideration'' will eventually be given to the idea of a single Asian currency, but
indicated it will not be soon.

''At some stage there will be talk and even serious consideration of the need for an Asian common
currency,'' Mahathir said, answering questions after a speech to a Tokyo symposium.

But he said it would take a long time and ''a lot of argument'' to talk through such a concept.

In the meantime, he suggested that ''other ways'' be considered. Mahathir has recently said that
Southeast Asian nations are considering forming a trade-weighted basket of currencies to reduce
their reliance on major currencies such as the dollar.

at this point in time with deflation coming from SE Asia and former
Russia and industry being only 15 percent here and services being
85 percent, one would think that the USA would throw out old measures of judging inflation and create new indicators..
although in my area of the country food prices and rent and apartments
are going up up and away..
why don't they just build indicators on telephone bill, cable bills,
health care services, transportation ie cabs and airplanes and trains etc, banking fees, etc, high tech consulting fees for computer woes..wonder what inflation would look like then? bet they won't do it..
ps..have you heard the ad on CNBC about calling a place to be able
to buy up to a $500,000 home with no money down and something
about throwing in cash for furniture..
no wonder housing sales are booming..wonder if down the road that
boom will signify something else..
