Repost: *** Bank of England hikes key rate

from Infobeat of 06/04/98

The Bank of England has raised a key interest rate by a
quarter-point, jolting unwary markets as it seeks to slow Britain's
economy to curb inflation. Most analysts in London had predicted the
central bank would hold rates steady. But the bank raised its repo
rate, the lowest rate at which it lends money to commercial banks, to
7.50% from 7.25%. London stock prices plunged on the news, amid fears
the higher interest rates will raise the value of the British pound.

Mike and All, since we spoke about "European weakness" some days ago, I thought I quickly repost this newsclip. So far no weakness in sight, really.
