<<The idea that NN and NTL are getting together gets kicked around a lot on this thread.>>

I picked this up from the Yahoo thread. One caveat - I think it is complete BS, since I could find no other reference to it anywhere. Even so, I was hopeful someone on our distinguished panel could definitively confirm/deny:

"Don't worry about NN. Here is good news.

According to CNN business news tonight, NN is being sought after by the Northen Telcomm. Recent drop in stock price, and desire to expand in WAN business apparently is the reason. Announcement could come as
early as Friday before market open. Didn't say exactly how much, but it will be in low 40's, accoring to his source. Let's go NN."

and later a response:

Hey Stockholic! I think you are right. My friend called me this morning to cinfirm that. He works for NN. But he thinks the announcement will be after the market.

Sounds pretty fishy to me, but what the hell do I know--I loaded up on NN right before a 15% drop!

***OT OT OT**** Re BCE / NTL

Remember that BCE owns 52% of NTL, and I don't know if that smells kind of anti-competitive (in Canada) but might be close.

Until about 1972, BCE (Bell Canada at that time) owned 100% of Nortel.

Also during the 70s, the Bell / Nortel relationship was examined by the government (RTPC - Restrictive Trade Practices Committee) and was given a clean bill of health. The world has changed a lot since then. ;-) ...but I do believe that the Government continues to regard the relationship as being healthy for the country, the industry as well as the company.

Anyway, last time I checked, every company would just love to have an overwhelming monopoly in its sector. I don't believe NTL is anywhere close for any of its products.

FWIW,
Ian.
