OK, so I was ribbing silly valley a little. We have plenty of the Clinton "rich" in the Southeast too (no agents though, unless you are a CEO). The thing that she may have been forgetting is that us thirty-something, two income, no tax breaks couples are likely to be net investors all the time. We are not the ones that pushed market participation rates to all-time highs. The ones on the margin, those who joined the party in the last year or two, are likely the ones with the least ability to tolerate losses. They are the ones that will run back to the GIC option in their 401K if they start seeing losses on the stock funds that aren't more than made up for by gains on the next statement. Imagine if they start getting laid off. For that matter, imagine if the six-figures-each couples in silly valley start getting laid off.
