MacLellan may have an axe to grind. It's hard to say. The other analysts seem much more balanced --- tip-toeing into the water. If all the US analyst who brought out reports over the last two days eventually bring out upgrades, NN will be on its way. I know I get over-exuberant and want everyone to see the same winning strategies I do, but analysts as a rule are skeptics --- the doubting Thomases of Wall Street.

Will we have to wait another quarter for the Street's respect? Possibly. And from this vantage point it seems like an eternity. From the other side --- after Q1 numbers are out --- it'll seem like a blink in time. My last daughter is finishing her first year at UCLA yet it seems like yesterday she went off to kindergarten.

And, now, from the ATM Year Conference:

Major Networking Vendors Collaborate To Demonstrate Interoperability of Multi-Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) Switching Solutions during ATM Year '98, In San Jose, CA, on June 4

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Major internetworking vendors Bay Networks, Cisco Systems, FORE Systems Inc., and Newbridge Networks announced today that they will collaborate in a demonstration of Multi-Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) interoperability testing at the ATM Year '98 Conference and Exhibition in San Jose, CA on June 4, located in The ATM Applications Showcase booth. This is the third time that multi-vendor MPOA interoperability demonstrations have been conducted, reinforcing the industry's growing commitment to the development and advancement of this Layer 3 switching standard.

In addition, leading networking vendors 3Com, Alcatel, Cabletron Systems, GN Nettest, Harris and Jeffries, IBM, Interphase Corporation, Visual Networks, Network Associates, RADCOM, Trillium Digital Systems, Wandel & Goltermann Technologies, and Xylan Corporation are committed to supporting ongoing interoperability testing efforts for MPOA-based solutions that enable enterprise customers to take advantage of a standards-compliant next generation Layer 3 switching architecture.

"It's great to see the number of major networking vendors supporting the development of a standards-based internetworking solution that leverages ATM as a backbone technology," said Mike McConnell, Director of Enterprise Management and LAN Programs at Infonetics Research, Inc. "End-users demand a standards-based solution before they feel comfortable deploying new technology into a multi-vendor LAN environment. This continued progress will help to alleviate some of their concerns."

The MPOA interoperability demonstration will involve a broad range of Bay Networks, Cisco Systems, FORE Systems Inc., and Newbridge Networks equipment. The demonstration will show several degrees of interoperability and connectivity including:

1) MPOA clients registering with other vendors' MPOA servers using LAN Emulation (LANE) v2;

2) Multiple vendors' MPOA servers communicating with one another using Next Hop Routing Protocol (NHRP);

3) MPOA clients from one vendor passing video traffic to MPOA clients from another vendor via short-cut Switched Virtual Circuits (SVCs).

The upcoming demonstration will highlight the combination of LANE v2 and NHRP interoperability openly displayed between multiple vendors. These are major components of the MPOA specification, which was ratified in July 1997. With LANE v2, MPOA provides a seamless migration for legacy networking infrastructures, allowing users to protect existing investments in hubs, switches, routers, Network Interface Cards, and cabling, while adding scalability and resiliency to LANE. With NHRP, multiple MPOA servers can communicate with one another, exchanging short-cut ATM path information. This combination of LANE v2 and NHRP in MPOA dramatically increases the scalability of the routing infrastructure, without sacrificing overall internetworking performance. LANE v2 and NHRP are also key components when extending MPOA into the wide area, where ATM-based carrier infrastructures can be used to provide internetworking services to enterprise users.

In San Jose, the participating networking vendors will exhibit video streams over IP throughout the multi-vendor demonstration network.
