Hello TUNA, are you there?
Yes I am here Vrobin. I tried to get hold of my brother TUNA but he is too busy with Vivus thread.
So he just vaxed, vvvfaxed me, fffffffaxed, me his latest opinion and asked me to vread it to you as it is.And here it is:
( By de vay, he seemed to be very serious and upset about de ole thing and said to just post his answer, and hear it is ):

VLAD: OUTLOOK for PFIZER and VIAGRA. As a physician, let me take this further.
First of all, let me announce that IMHO, if you have shorted Pfizer, DO N O T C O V E R Y E T . My target price for covering is ' ~ $65 - 70. ( Zebra, are you listening? ).
Next, the deaths.
Some statistics and observations and then some conclusions:
- 75% of all men die of coronary artery disease ( CAD ).
- -it is the #1 cause of death in US.
- Death is by a massive heart attack or by an arrhythmia ( heart rhythm irregularity ).
- BOTH are preceded by hypotension.
- Both can be relieved ( temporarily { hours } or for longer time months, years )
By nitrates.
- fundamental therapy for coronary artery disease ( alias angina pectoris, alias coronary
arteriosclerosis, alias iscemic heart disease, alias congestive heart failure ) are
nitrates and Ace -Inhibitors.( Zestril is the drug taken by the recently alleged Viagra
death, the Obstetrician that that died in the Mass General ER
- there are over one million heart attacks a year and over 700,000 men die every year
from it.
- probably 30% of impotent men have coronary artery disease
Conclusions:
- a very LARGE no of impotent men has the leading cause of death, CAD, and a large no is taking either nitrates AND / OR ace- inhibitors.
- A rising no of deaths is so far been reported, of men taking the combination of Viagra, and Nitrates and/or Ace Inhibitors.
- -that no will rise steadily because of the large amount of people taking Viagra.
- This men MOST likely, IMHO, HAVE NOT been screened for CAD by their Urologists, because Urologists are not qualified to do that.
- -Many, may lie about their symptoms, so as to get Viagra.
What will happen as a result of that?
Simply, we will go back, time and again, to that old American pastime: Gambling. No, not Vegas or the stock market ( which lately stinks ), but to a more proven method:

L A W S U I T S.

The plaintiffs will simply allege that
-the deceased did not have a stress thallium to detect CAD
-he did not have a 24 hour cardiac monitor to detect an arrhythmia that could have been worsened by Viagra.
-he did not have an echocardiogram to diagnose CAD
-He was NOT told that VIAGRA is contraindicated with Nitrates, ace-inhibitors, and soon to be added, other hypotensive agents, such as most antihypertensives as well Lasix and such diuretics.
-that NO such precautions are documented in the Urologists or Fam MD's chart.
-that because the patient was a smoker, was overweight, sedentary, with a high cholesterol,
the Urologist and ESPECIALLY the primary care physician ( in the HMO? GG: I can already see screams from HMO CEOs!!!! To pay for all these tests, GG. ) had a DUTY to SCREEN the deceased with all the above tests prior to giving him Viagra.
( Of course the plaintiffs will allege nothing because they are deceased. It will be the forlorn children and spouse to make this allegations of having been deprived of the love and companionship of their beloved deceased male ).
The result:
A )Pfizer will allege that the patient had other reasons to die from.
That will not carry in court. If ANY of the several above mentioned steps in CAD prevention and care is missing , the plaintiff will allege, and the jury will concur, that Viagra COULD HAVE been the cause and so the case will be settled in court, or out of court.
Furthermore, because Pfizer, the Docs, Urologists, and HMOs are ALL RICH folks, with DEEP pockets, these suits will be settled for large amounts of money.
B) Anybody doubt this? VLAD, you mentioned Silicon breast implants.Let me also remind you of
-Prozac and Scientology
-Bendectin with pregnant women
-All meds with pregnant women and child birth defects.
-FenFen / Redux for obesity
Just some.
C) when the HMOs start seeing the costs of detecting CAD AND monitoring CAD AND paying for Viagra , while on Viagra, at a time of rising HMO premiums and companies complaining these premiums, they will mount a PR campaign that Viagra is too dangerous and they will pressure PFE and the FDA to take it off the market.
At that point, PFE will be back, If they are lucky, were they started: $40/ share.
How long will it take for this scenario to evolve. Not long at all, IMHO, because
 the giant amount of men taking this pill helter skelter
 the giant publicity, before now and after now, for Viagra.
 The deep pockets involved
 The giant amount of lawyers looking for cash flow; ( and of patients I may add )
 The repidly shrinking healthcare dollar to pay even for health essentials, let alone " the luxury of sex".( Sorry, had to put that in.Not everybody thinks sex is a necessity, GG ).
I will be glad to entertain alternate points of view,
TA

Wife says spouse died after he used Viagra

By Matthew G. Kreamer
The Fresno Bee
(Published June 4, 1998)

VISALIA - A Visalia woman believes the wildly popular anti-impotence drug Viagra played a role in the death of her 65-year-old husband.
Gerri Howorth said Wednesday that Harry "Mike" Howorth collapsed immediately after they had sexual relations Friday morning. Mr. Howard had taken one of the pills an hour earlier, she said.
"He started shaking and jerking, and I said, 'Mike, are you all right?' " Gerri Howorth said. "He never answered. He just lay there with glassy eyes."
Her husband never regained consciousness and died Sunday at Kaweah Delta District Hospital. His death certificate says he died of respiratory failure.
Gerri Howorth said her husband had a history of heart trouble and had once taken nitroglycerine, a heart medication that can cause side effects when taken with Viagra.
"The doctor said his heart was good. He hadn't taken nitroglycerine in at least 10 years," Gerri Howorth said. "He'd been healthy."
She declined to provide the name of her husband's doctor.
Viagra's manufacturer, Pfizer, has warned men who take heart medication against using its pill.
There have been six reported deaths of Viagra users in the United States. A possible seventh case involving a man in Cambridge, Mass., was being investigated this week.
Fresno urologist Gilbert Dale said Viagra probably isn't to blame in most of the cases.
"Basically what this is is, if you take a population of older people and make them sexually active, just the exercise could cause the problem," said Dale, who was not Mr. Howorth's urologist.
The sexual activity-related death rate among older people is similar whether they take Viagra or not, Dale said.
Viagra, the first pill to treat impotence, has attracted 1.5 million prescriptions since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it in March.
Generally, Viagra is a safe drug even for people with heart conditions as long as they aren't taking nitroglycerine, said Dale, who has had his Fresno practice for 22 years.
The combination of Viagra and nitroglycerine could substantially lower blood pressure. Dale said he has about 300 patients taking Viagra and none have stopped taking it for medical reasons.
That doesn't make Gerri Howorth feel any better. She said she paid more than $2,000 to have an autopsy performed on her husband Wednesday after Tulare County officials declined to do one. Preliminary results could be available as early as today, but laboratory results could take up to six weeks.
William L. Seymour, Howorth's lawyer, said they must wait until the results are available before deciding what action to take, if any.
"What we think we're looking for is some kind of gross anomaly - a ruptured artery, for instance - or massive damage to the heart muscle," Seymour said. "We were somewhat surprised by the physician's finding on the death certificate because the county was investigating and we thought they would do an autopsy."
Seymour said the county did not perform an autopsy because Mr. Howorth died under a physician's care Sunday and not at his home Friday.

A typical autopsy would probably not detect Viagra because it's such a new drug, said Tulare County sheriff's Sgt. Kurt Mitchell, who works in the Coroner's Office.
Seymour, though, agreed with Dale's assessment that Mr. Howorth's age, combined with increased sexual activity, could have caused his death.
"If you're 60, 70, 80 years old and have not had sex in four, five or six years, it could certainly be logical that the act itself could be a triggering mechanism," he said.
Gerri Howorth said her husband got a prescription for Viagra and a sample packet containing three pills from a local urologist Thursday morning. He awoke about 5 a.m. Friday and took one of the pills, she said.
"I remember him getting a drink of water, and he must have taken one of the pills because there were only two left," she said.
The couple had sexual relations and he collapsed immediately afterward, she said. He was declared brain dead at the hospital and taken off a respirator Sunday.
The couple traveled extensively in their motor home and had planned to leave Tuesday for Oregon. Mr. Howorth spent 22 years in the military, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as a 1st sergeant in the Marines.
Gerri Howorth is convinced Viagra played a part in her husband's death.
"I'm going to go on Maury Povich, Montel - all of them - and I'm going to scream from the roof until they listen," she said. "If I had known then what I know now, he would have never taken it."
Services for Mr. Howorth will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Miller Memorial Chapel.

Hey Tunica,

I tried to ignore your posts as long as I could but enough is enough. First of all what kind of MD are you? I am assuming you are an MD. You cannot possibly be a urologist or you would be better versed with respect to Muse versus Viagra. Are you really long VIVUS? If you are my sympathies are with you. If by some remote chance you are a urologist and want to buy some MUSE I will sell you as much as you want at very reduced prices. I have a refrig. full of the stuff. As a urologist Viagra is producing wonderful results, wish I could say the same for Muse but unfortunately I cannot. Good luck with your VIVUS position.

My apologies to the other VIVUS longs who show a lot more class (Jim, comes to mind)

I have no position in VIVUS long or short, but if I did it would be short.

hilm

PS. nice name choice.

Robin," 3- 4 deaths every week ".Staying right on track:Since the 13 deaths reported 6/4/98, we are now up to 30.

FDA Received Adverse Data 6/29/98
On the Side Effects of Viagra
By ROCHELLE SHARPE
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
WASHINGTON -- Nearly three months after approving Viagra, the Food and Drug Administration had received about 100 reports of men suffering serious adverse reactions or dying after taking the impotence drug, but regulators remain convinced Viagra is safe.
Altogether, as of mid-June, the FDA had received about 30 reports of men dying after taking Pfizer Inc.'s blockbuster impotence drug. Most were elderly, with other health problems. In addition to the deaths, the reports show seven men had heart attacks, eight suffered strokes, four blacked out and six had vision problems, according to government reports obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.
The reports, however, probably cover only a fraction of the cases of serious side effects suffered by the two million men who have used Viagra since it hit the market in April. The government doesn't require reports on serious adverse reactions, and public-health experts figure that the FDA typically receives reports on only 1% to 10% of these reactions. Rather than track all reactions, the government searches for signals that a drug may cause unusual effects on patients, which it says it can detect from just one or two cases.
Specialists Study Reports
The FDA has convened a team of about seven specialists to study the reports on Viagra, but has found no signals that anything unusual had occurred, said Dr. Murray Lumpkin, deputy director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
It is clear that Viagra shouldn't be mixed with nitrates, a warning Pfizer puts on the drug's label. Still, several men have died after mixing Viagra and nitrates.
But the latest reports raise questions about whether other drugs should be taken with Viagra, said Dr. Raymond Woosley, chairman of Georgetown University's pharmacology department. "All high-blood-pressure medications are suspect," he said, since Viagra can lower blood pressure, causing a potentially dangerous drop in pressure, he said. According to the reports, at least 14 people were taking some kind of blood-pressure medication when they took Viagra, including at least four who died, three who blacked out and two who developed vision problems.
Although Pfizer's package insert states that blood-pressure medications were tested and could safely be taken with Viagra, Dr. Woosley said the numbers in the study may have been so small that the company couldn't detect any reactions. He also raised concerns about taking Viagra with Glucatrol, a diabetes drug. At least five patients taking Viagra and Glucatrol or a similar drug have had bad reactions. Two died.
Multiple Medications
To be sure, many of the patients who had adverse effects had a variety of diseases and were on multiple medications; without further study, it would be impossible to explain why they had bad reactions. One stroke victim was taking Viagra and 11 other medications.
Some of the reports sound serious but provide so little information that it is impossible to tell whether the reactions cited actually occurred. Also, some of the reports may be duplicates. Pfizer received reports that four men in West Virginia went blind after taking the drug, but Pfizer spokesman Andy McCormick said the reports came from one salesman who heard it from an osteopath, who heard about the men. The company, which is required to forward all reports of serious reactions to the FDA, couldn't find more information about the situation.
Several ophthalmologists said that the vision reactions reported to the FDA aren't cause for alarm.
