John, I believe your analysis is basically correct. I know this and you know this. But a complete software CD with tools and documentation on creating a linux extreme cluster that was put together by the joint work of the Goddard Space Flight Center and Redhat is only

Some times bean counters only understand the bottom line.

En-gin-Ears being basically skin flints like a challenge at doing something really cheap.

I can't predict what the intangible invisible forces in the market place will do. But linux extreme will become a legitimate solution for some of SGI's customers. As a stock holder it's little comfort that a bad decision was made when SGI lost the sale.

Remember, An Intel processor is a terrible thing to infect with a borg virus unless is resides in a system built by SGI in Bogata.
