Infecting Organism/ Drug of First Choice
Enterococcus: Penicillin G or Ampicllin : Enterococcus is now not only resistant to these drugs but it
is also resistant to the ONLY drug that used to be effective
against it, Vancomycin. There is fear now that thousands of
dialysis patients will day of Vancomycin - resistant
infections. This is also in the Medical letter ; look for it.
Staphylococcus aureus or :Staph used to be sens to PCN. It is now mostly resistant. It
is called Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (
MRSA ) . This is also invading hospitals now and some
strains are also becoming resistant to Vancomycin (
Vanco), the only effective antibiotic. There is fear , like in
enterococcus, that millions of patients with indwelling
catheters or valves etc parts ( the favorite site of staph
sepsis, will die.
epidermidis: Penicillin G or V : as
above.Rapidly emerging resistance.
Streptococcus pyogenes: Penicillin G or V
Streptococcus, group B: Penicillin G or Ampicillin
Streptococcus viridans: Penicillin G
Streptococcus bovis: Penicillin G
Streptococcus pneumoniae: Penicillin G: Penicillin is no longer
recommended for step Pneumoniae,
the most common organism for pneum because
up to 20% of isolates are
becoming resistant.
Streptococcus (anaerobic): Penicillin G: not common: it causes
abscesses..
Neisseria meningitidis: Penicillin G.Becoming resistant. Treatment of
choice now is a third generation
cephalosporin
Bacillus anthraccis (anthrax): Penicillin G; Essentially eradicated
in USAExtinct, except in Iraq in
Saddam Husseins lab were he wants to
export it here
Clostridium perfringens: Penicillin G: Rare forms of gangrene
Clostridium tetani: Penicillin G.Tetanus very uncommon now with
everybody vaccinated
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae: Penicillin G;
Listeria monocytogenes: Ampicillin :
Proteus mirabilis: Ampicillin
Capnocytophaga canimorsus: Penicillin G :
Eikenella corrodens: Ampicillin
Fusobacterium: Penicillin G ALL
these are very
rare
Leptotrichia buccalis: Penicillin G
Pasteurella multocida: Penicillin G
Spirillum minus: Penicillin G
Streptobacillus moniliformis: Penicillin G
Actinomyces israelli: Penicillin G
Borrelia recurrentis: Penicillin G
Treponema pallidum (syphilis): Penicillin G Syphillis is eradicated in general
Treponema pertenue: Penicillin G

The Medical Letter On Drugs and Therapeutics is one of the most highly respected information sources for physicians. Penicillin remains the gold standard, first choice antibiotic for many pathogens and common infections, as you can see. To state others wise is misinformation and medically wrong.

COMMENT: Your conclusion is completely wrong. If you say that in an exam today you will fail.
MOST c o m m o n l y found pathogens today are resistant to penicillin. This is why PFE is trying to market TROVAN.
The key word here is COMMONLY FOUND, ie the most frequent and abundant.
