Have you been to Singapore lately ? "One big shopping mall" is almost apt. Perhaps "many big shopping malls" would be closer.

Starbucks has entered the Malaysian market already. They have a fairly serious competitor in The Coffee Bean (not sure where they are from).

It has been my experience that most of the customers you find in these outlets are expats or expat social contacts.

With the huge decline of expats I wouldn't give a cup of coffee for their profitability. Who in Asia can afford a $4 USD cup of coffee, even with the luxurious surroundings?????
