NEW YORK, June 4 (UPI) - Technology issues are staging a rebound in
moderate trading (Thursday) after Wednesday's sell-off amid earnings
worries, while other stocks move on merger and earnings news.
Bay Networks is pacing the Big Board actives, up 1 7/8 to 29 13/16.
Compaq Computer is next, ahead 3/16 to 27 13/16.
Among the other technology issues, Dow components IBM is up 1 1/4 to
115 1/8 and Hewlett-Packard is ahead 5/8 to 61 5/16, while Texas Instruments
is up 2 1/4 to 50 1/4, Micron Technology is up 1 1/4 to 23 3/4 and Motorola is ahead
5/8 to 51 7/16.
Intel is Nasdaq's second most active issue, up 2 1/2 to 68 7/16. The
semiconductor giant tumbled Wednesday amid rumors it would issue a
warning about its second-quarter earnings due to pricing pressure. After
the market closed, Intel said it hasn't changed the earnings guidance
it's giving to analysts.
Dell Computer is also up 2 13/16 to 83 1/16, Microsoft is up 15/16 to
85 1/4, Cisco Systems is up 13/16 to 75 7/16, Oracle is up 1 to 24 9/16 and
Sun Microsystems is up 1 1/4 to 43 1/8.
DSC Communications Corp. is leading the Nasdaq actives, up 7 7/8 to 27
9/16 after agreeing to be acquired by the French company Alcatel Alsthom
in a stock deal valued at $4.4 billion.
But Alcatel, which says the deal will expand its presence in the U.S.
telecommunications equipment market, is down 4 9/16 to 38 7/8 on the NYSE.
Elsewhere on Nasdaq, Northwest Airlines Corp. is down 2 3/4 to 39 7/8 after
warning late Wednesday its second-quarter earnings will be
''significantly below'' last year's levels as a result of strikes and
''continued weakness in the Pacific economy.''
Cleveland Indians Baseball Co. is quoted at 14 7/8 on its debut. The
baseball company's initial public offering of 4 million shares of its
class A common stock was priced at $15 a share. It trades on Nasdaq
under the ticker symbol CLEV.

Darren,
That was a great call you made about today's market momentum. You called it perfectly. Up in the morning, drift down during middle of day and finish up strongly.

Thanks for the analysis. It helped me make a nice profit today on Bay and 3Com.
