[FORE Switches Selected for Level 3's National Network]

Intelligent Infrastructure Provides Foundation For Planned End-to-End IP Network

PITTSBURGH, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:FORE), a global supplier of networking solutions based on an Intelligent Infrastructure(TM), announced today that the company has been selected by Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:LVLT) to provide asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology and products to build the world's first carrier class end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) network.

Level 3, of Louisville, Colorado, has announced plans to build and operate advanced fiber optic networks throughout the United States utilizing Internet technology. The company plans to offer a range of Internet access services at a variety of capacity levels and, as technology allows, at specified Quality of Service (QoS) and security levels.

To enable these services, Level 3 selected FORE Systems' ASX family of ATM switching systems for the initial deployment of the network core. A series of ForeRunner(R) switches form the Intelligent Infrastructure that ties Level 3's access and routing technology together to create a robust, highly reliable and scalable network that can deliver predictable, high-performance service levels. FORE's ForeRunner ASX-1000 ATM backbone switches will be deployed in Level 3's 15 initial gateway sites. Each ASX-1000 provides 10 gigabytes of switching capacity, and is equipped with ForeRunner OC-12 (622 Mbps) or OC-3 (155 Mbps) network modules.

FORE Systems will work with Level 3 to scale the network to support bandwidth capacities of OC-48c (2.4 Gbps) and larger.

"With FORE's Intelligent Infrastructure, Level 3 is strategically positioned to provide the world's first end-to-end IP switching network," said Thomas J. Gill, president and CEO, FORE Systems. "We are extremely pleased to have been selected by Level 3 to provide a foundation that gives them the scalability and flexibility to handle a wide range of services, both today and in the years ahead."

Crowe and his entourage were in Seattle yesterday, Denver today and are to be in Phoenix tomorrow (as well as Wyoming), doing a series of road shows for investors. They are apparently going well judging from the stock reaction. There has been buying pressure after each of the presentations have ended.
