Intel is part of one of those chip consortiums

But probably only to keep its fingers in the standards pie.
The company has gotten so conservative in its fat cat phase that it needs someone to tell it what to build.

Celeron was a complete fiasco. Already AMD is advertising that it will offer K6-2s at high clock rates and match the lowest Celeron price. Intel is going to lose every benchmark test. AMD is carving out a performance niche at the low end.

Maybe Gates should just call up the new CEO and have a talk. Tell him about what it was like when he couldn't get IBM to dump the 286 and go with a 386. How he found this company CPQ that was eager to introduce a 386 based system and what happened to IBM as a result of their microchannel fiasco.

You can see the general attitutde of the Intel people on this thread. They think they own the PC industry. They are even more arrogant than the IBMers were in 1986, and for far less reason.

Its beginning to remind me of IBM under Akers.

They really should hire some new blood.
