So if the ethernet card doesn't use an ISA or PCI slot,

then what kind of ethernet card do you buy? A PCI compatible ethernet
card?

Yes,

key to understand is that it is still a PCI device it just doesn't take up a physical slot. Personally I prefer to minimize the integration of video, sound, and network connections. Network integration is probably to me the easiest to trade off for. My opionion is purely based on having lots of these cards lying around to use so why buy one on the MB. Same goes for SCSI.
