For those not sure about what shorting a stock means, you might want to check out this site.

There may be better explanations out there in cyberspace, but I guess this makes the point. If the brokerage house does not have the shares to lend, then the potential to short will be reduced. I guess the MMs speculated that the lack of news would drive the price down. So if I understand correctly they can borrow the stock from the brokerage house, sell it immediately, and then when it bottoms out buy it back up. Nice way to make a profit.
