Apologies if this has already been posted. June 4, 1998 Fore Systems Up 12% On Takeover Rumors, Consolidation Dow Jones Newswires NEW YORK -- Fore Systems Inc. (FORE) shares gained more than 12% Thursday as traders said there is renewed market speculation about an impending takeover. The stock was also up on a rumor that fellow networking equipment maker Bay Networks Inc. (BAY) is a takeover target of Northern Telecom Ltd. (NT). The sector in general received a boost this week as consolidation made the stocks more attractive. Alcatel Alsthom CIE. Generale D'Electricite (ALA) Thursday agreed to buy DSC Communications Corp. (DIGI). Earlier in the week, Tellabs Inc. (TLAB) announced plans to acquire Ciena Corp. (CIEN). The rumors circulating around Fore didn't name any specific suitors. In the past, however, Tellabs has been rumored to be interested in acquiring the company. Tellabs could not immediately be reached for comment. Options activity in Fore's stock was modest. A Fore Systems spokesman declined to comment on the takeover rumors and noted other networking stocks were also up Thursday. Fore closed up 2 15/32, or 12.3%, at 22 1/2 on Nasdaq volume of 3.1 million, compared with average daily volume of 2.5 million. Among other networking equipment makers, 3Com Corp. (COMS) rose 1 9/16, or 6.3%, to 26 9/16; Ascent Communications Inc. (ASND) gained 3 1/16, or 7.3%, to 45; Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) added 2 1/4, or 3%, to 76 7/8; Xylan Corp.
