I think we say it the same way then, Chuzzlewit. Perhaps, it is the difference in the pronunciation of air (some pronounce it ay-er, but I do not). I pronounce air like fair (don't want to confuse the issue anymore if there is a different way of pronouncing "fair). Sorry, I think "air" was a poor choice to describe the sound, because now I recall that there are regional pronunciations of "air". Sometimes writing a word to describe the sound does not do it justice.

Sounds to me like describing pronunciations with words, without using accents and phonetic symbols, is very difficult.
