NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Telecom equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. and uniView Technologies Corp. said Thursday they are collaborating to bring Internet-based telecommunications to interactive television and consumer electronics devices. The companies will use Lucent software to provide Internet access and e-mail along with call waiting and caller-ID services on Web telephones, Internet set-top boxes, network computers and Internet-enabled TVs. The system is expected to be available in the third quarter. "With telephones in more than 94 percent of U.S. households and the Internet becoming a part of everyday life, it is imperative that telephony and Internet devices be fast, efficient and user-friendly," said Patrick A. Custer, uniView president and chief executive officer. Under the agreement, uniView will develop and license a Web telephone based on Lucent's design, as well as related Internet service support. Web telephones combine Internet and e-mail with traditional phone functions. Lucent's design will include a monitor, speaker phone, keyboard and modem. UniView is a Dallas-based consumer electronics company. Shares of Lucent (LU) gained 2 to 71-3/8 in midday trading Thursday. UniView (UVEW) shares climbed 13/16 to 2-25/32.
