Four Food Groups 1. Delicious 2. What's good for you 3. Make do 4. What the dog gets The same can be said of the computer one wants. I want one that's "good for me". I only run an internet web browser, some kill keys, charts, and a chat chat channel. Here is a possible configuration with various thoughts in mind: PII 266 chip Asus PL297 mobo - 5 pci slots 3 x 64 ECC SDRAM 4 x $40 PCI graphics cards (adequate MULTIMONITOR set-up with Win 98) Intel or 3Com ethernet card cheap ISA sound card - to make Spots happy- my trading enviroment just has CNBC in the background. For playing music, I use my boom box. Hard Drive: IBM 4.3($168) - 6.4($189) - 8.4($254). Still trying to decide. Will a bigger one make my system work better if I have plenty of RAM? The 8.4 does have an improved head. The PII 266 vs 300. 266=Cheaper, 300=won't make the 10mbps internet connection work faster or apps work better. ??? Mobo: a BX is not needed for 266 or 300 speed. If a 266 (or 300) is good for me, why put money into a BX mobo for future upgrading? When my needs require me to upgrade to a faster chip, then I'll upgrade the mobo at that time (all PCI) which will be a much better than the first generations offered now. The Colorgraphics multimonitor card is $695. Using it would preserve many PCI slots for the future. BUT, using Win 98 and 4 X SGRAM cards at $50 each would save a lot of money. The downside is that all my PCI slots would be full, but what else is there for me to add to a Stock Trading specific computer? Would it be better to buy one really good graphics card and then three cheaper ones in case I decide to buy a game some day? RAM: from previous discussions, what will improve my system the most is RAM - lots of it. Some other thoughts in being more budget minded is a cheaper case than the delicious SuperMirco. (Will need to look and see if mid towers will support the slots on the MB). May just go with the supermicro anyway. I would have Totally Awesome assemble it. They beat all the prices on PriceWatch and they offer 3 year warranty on all parts and lifetime warranty on any type of Labor. Monitor: ADI MicroScan 17" 5G ($350) .26 dp; 107 refresh rate at 800x600; (the 5P+ is cheaper, has lower refresh and is only TCO '92) 3.5 yr warranty on the crt. Looks nice, good reviews.adiusa.com zdnet.com Critiques welcome. S.W.
