I suspect there is something in our biological/psychological makeup which predisposes us toward an awareness of magic. God. Spirits. Superstition. Little rituals to appease the Forces behind the veil. I catch myself doing little superstitious things. Unconsciously, without really believing in them. I think there is basic comfort in surmising "life, the Universe, and everything" is not just random and has a definite, directed pattern to it. The rest grew out of that, with a little help from 5000 years of a literate clergy.
