The April 20 issue of Forbes contains an article entitled I Spy on strategic use of "competitive intelligence". The sidebar has a list of Intelligence Eagles on which Motorola ranked #1 in 1996, #2 in 1997:

Forbes calls them eagles, others call them bandits.

MOT could be more competitive by adopting outside technology more quickly instead of giving it the "not invented here" treatment. Maybe their current problems will force them to rely more on technology originating from suppliers, and less on technology developed internally or obtained through competitive intelligence. WT
