It's been years since I was involved in that end of the business but my recollection is that you can have the funds ACATed or DTC'd anytime you like.

Obviously you don't want to take physical possession of the funds....as long as you have an account open somewhere where they can be directed the former employer has to turn over control.

One guy who is still in the business and should know for certain is a guy named steve around here somewhere. I think he works for a firm named yamner, so if you do a search on yamner you should find him.
