Good question. I think LU is worried about CSCO's move into telecom. CSCO buying AFCI would be interesting. In theory, CSCO could effectively use AFCI's UMC local loop box to bypass LU at the central office and divert traffic straight onto a CSCO-based IP network.

My bet on AFCI has little to do with an acquisition however. Getting DIGI out of the way was very nice.

paul.

it's a given that lu needs a datacom player to compete with csco. while afci would definitely be interesting, i think they've got bigger fish in mind: ascend, bay, and i've even heard nokia (for their sdh technology, international customers, and it'd be a vertical integration of sorts given lu already supplies their gsm chips) tossed around.

i'm sure some major acquisition will happen post-sep. as you're probably aware, lu's barred from pooling of interest mergers until then -- if i'm not mistaken, the two-year anniversary is oct 1 and they'll be free to pool stock to acquire. plus, i don't think they formed that $100 million vc arm, lucent venture partners, headed by henry schacht, for nothing.
