Larry,

Covered calls are even lower-risk than owning the stock. You can do it in an IRA. Only requirement is that you own the stock.

No such thing as a "covered put" unless it is "covered" by about $100K in cash or stock (any kind of stock).

This margin requirement varies by broker. Note that Paine(-in-the-Ass)Webber does not want your option business -- they require $200K to write a single covered call on the stock you own.
