cost advantage of Alpha over Intel
Good point, and I did miss that. Alpha is a much smaller die and thus a single wafer produces more Alpha chips. Against High-end Intel processors, Alpha is already less expensive. I understand that CPQ is trying to determine what the real costs for Alpha chips will be given CPQ's volumes, but the initial feedback is that they are WAY lower than anybody figured.

BTW I think that the service business and alpha were both important assets, and there are a lot of other hidden technology gems in the DEC infrastructure which CPQ will probably use a lot more effectively than DEC did.

We saw CPQ choose DEC's ad agency over CPQ's, and there are a number of other shifts in favor of DEC products and people that may surprise some of the CPQ watchers.
