Robert, this may not be completely accurate, but Henry may be referring to making very small changes to a compound, and thus keeping the same physiological activity, but then calling it your own and sell it for similar activity to the original compound(did that make sense?). For a rough idea, think of the umpteen ACE inhibitors on the market. Many companies own one, sell one, but they all work in the same way and are similar(with small changes).

Most Biotech therapeutic products are polypeptide hormones (interferons, interleukins, or growth factors) and small molecule mimics can be made to replace them as therapeutic agents.
