I'll buy when they get under $1000 having been burned several times buying notebooks only to see them obsoleted.
For nearly all notebook users a MediaGX-233-266 will get the job done.
As for the Compaq brand notebooks...I think they could use better screens. They could also be a lot less money but Compaq is using them (particularly the GX based units) as a cash cow. It seems however, that notebook buyers tend to pay the extra for the big name stuff.

That's not a MediaGX problem -- It happens to me on my Compaq Presario (Pentium MMX 200 MHz) about once a week... Purely a software bug.
