Bay Networks volume up amid Nortel rumors
Friday June 5, 2:39 pm Eastern Time

NEW YORK, June 5 (Reuters) - Bay Networks Inc.'s shares were among the most-active issues on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday amid speculation Canadian telecommunications giant Northern Telecom Ltd. (NTL.TO - news) would make a bid for the company, traders said.

''The fast money thinks Nortel will take a run at them (Bay Networks),'' one trader, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

Bay Networks' shares were off 9/16 at 30-5/16 on volume of more than 5.1 million shares. Nortel's American Depositary Receipts stood up 14/16 at 62-15/16.

Officials from Bay Networks were not immediately available to comment.

On Friday, Nortel said it will announce a major industry alliance at a trade show next week in Atlanta. Analysts said it was not clear if the alliance has anything to do with Bay Networks.

Nortel spokesman Peter Janacek declined to comment on the speculation.

''We're not speculating on rumors whatsoever,'' he said on Friday.

A person close to Nortel said it was highly unlikely the announcement next week would have anything to do with a merger or an acquisition.
