I think i spoke too soon!? 03:15 PM ET 06/05/98 U.S. FDA panel recommends OK of Lasik surgery WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A panel of advisers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended approval on Friday of a new surgical system for correcting nearsightedness. Emory University in Atlanta said in a statement that the advisers OK'd its Lasik (laser in-situ keratomileusis) procedure that uses a surgical system developed by researchers there. It is the first time one of the panels has recommended approval directly to a team of doctors for a surgical system, the university said. ''This vote means that Emory has proven through extensive research that its LASIK system is safe and effective for the treatment of nearsightedness up to -15 diopters, which encompasses some 95 percent of all nearsighted patients or approximately 72 million Americans,'' Dr. Doyle Stulting, one of the cornea specialists who helped develop the system, said in a statement. ''If the FDA follows the panel's recommendations, Emory will be the only center in the country to earn approval to perform LASIK.'' The Emory system uses a tool known as a microkeratome to cut a flap in the cornea -- the eye's outer layer -- and then uses an excimer laser made by Summit Technology and standard surgery to reshape the eye to correct vision. The flap is replaced and as the eye heals, it is pulled into a better shape, making vision clearer. ''The quality of my vision following LASIK is far superior to glasses and equals or exceeds contact lenses,'' said Dr. Keith Thompson, who helped develop the system and who had the surgery done on himself. ^REUTERS@
