I've never owned one, but I think it's short of a software modem. I believe the difference is that the modem drivers and control code are stored on the PC, and are downloaded to the modem for each use. I;m almost positive that it doesn;t use the CPU for the data pump, and I don;t think the CPU does much in the way of supervisory functions either. I'll gladly stand corrected.
