Mo, >>>"The premium for the high end (IMO) is not worth it for the household market."<<<

Is this maybe worth it?:

I saw a 400 MHz PII, 64 MB RAM (not sure if SDRAM or not),
7 GB HD, 32x CDROM, 4MB Video card, 56 K Modem, Win 95,
etc. in the SJ Mercury News business section for $1,599 (no
monitor). I bought a Sony 17" at Fry's (Multiscan 200GS) for
$599 about a month ago. So, including (an excellent)
monitor, you can get a complete 400 MHz system for
~ $2,200.

(from an earlier post of mine today)

Did it ever dawn on you sub 1K bigots that the price of the CPU and MOBO can become not that big of a deal anymore compared to the price of all the other hardware in the machine? For $600 extra dollars, you can get a machine with which you are set for a good four years. Taking it further, the non-CPU stuff above is about 2X what I see on the el cheapo PCs. So, the extra 200 MHz in the CPU may be costing you only a couple or three hundred bucks more than if you bought anyone's 1/3rd speed (benchmark speed) chip. The rest of the $600 is going toward the non-CPU part of the machine. Well worth it to me.

If you really want to save $$, what you could do is buy enough boxes of Crackerjacks until you find an AMD or Cyrix chip inside, get your MOBO, 32 MB of RAM, 3.2 GB of HD, etc., and put it together yourself. Maybe Ali will come over with his screwdriver to help!

Sounds like a Friday.
