WASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) - The Chubb Corp. will
resume paying President Bill Clinton's legal costs for fighting
the appeal of the sexual harassment and defamation lawsuit
brought by Paula Jones.
Chubb decided to resume paying Clinton's costs because
Jones said she will appeal a judge's ruling throwing out her
claims against the president, according to a story in the
latest issue of U.S. News & World Report.
In September 1997 a Chubb subsidiary and State Farm Mutual
Automobile Insurance Co. stopped covering Clinton expenses
after Jones claims were dismissed. The companies argued that
their policies did not cover the remaining sexual harassment
claims.
Both insurance companies were paying up to $1.5 million in
Clinton's legal fees until they cut off the money. The
president then hired a law firm to try to collect.
Chubb, but not State Farm, says it will now cover the
president's legal costs. However, the company still will not
pay for the hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses
Clinton incurred fighting Jones' remaining harassment claim
since last September's ruling, the magazine said.
