It appears that the aol board thread has become active. I copied this post from there. Brings up an interesting question. One that I haven't seen the answer to.....unless I have missed it somewhere.

I stopped by a guy I know who owns a marine supply store here in the bay area. I asked him what he knew about MTBE. He said he hates it. I asked him why. He said it kills performance (he rides a Moto-Guzzi) and eats up hoses. He said the boating people hate it for what it does to water, but that the oil cos. love it. He said that they used to have to get rid of the stuff as a by-product and now they just mix it with gas. Can anyone comment
on where MTBE comes from? How it's made etc.
