Try SAMS Club if you have one... you can get a PII 400 Compaq system for about $2800 with 17" monitor.

Lack of Compaq PCs in retail outlets may mean they are selling like gangbusters, or it may be that distribution is screwed up. How can you tell which is true. In either case, no machines means lost sales. Doesn't sound like Compaq's optimized distribution model is executing very well. BTW, Dell will sell you a 400MHz machine with 17" monitor for less than $2300, with exactly what you want on it, and you will get it in less than a week.
