Fujitsu Idles England Fab, Puts Freeze On Price Cuts
(3:10 p.m. EDT, 6/5/98)
By Andrew MacLellan

Fujitsu Microelectronics Ltd., San Jose, will stop manufacturing DRAM chips at the company's Durham, England, fab and will instead transfer operations to the production of logic components beginning next year, according to a company spokesman.

The fab currently produces about 15,000 6-in. 16-Mbit DRAM wafers/mo. using a 0.4-micron process technology. Fujitsu did not say whether it will shift DRAM production to other fabs or reduce its total output of 16-Mbit chips.

A second Durham fab, which is slated to manufacture 64-Mbit DRAM, has yet to come on line.

The Fujitsu spokesman also confirmed that the company has placed a freeze on further DRAM price reductions in an effort to shore margins
