Compaq has the Youngest PCs in the U.S. Consumer Market; Packard Bell Maintains Number One Ownership Position by a Wide Margin

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 1998--In Media Metrix' semi annual Top 10 ranking of Windows PC installed base, Compaq ranks first in newest average age (2.6 years) among all home PCs, while IBM ranks first among the oldest average home PCs. Packard Bell maintains its leadership in overall installed base with a 19.6% share of the PC market -- or 6.9 million PCs out of 35.3 million total in US households. IBM ranks second in installed base with 6.9% of the market or 2.5 million PCs and Compaq ranks third overall in installed base with 2.3 million PCs, or 6.5% of the total market.

"Our data show there are over 8 million PCs that are more than five years old. This translates into a major opportunity for PC manufacturers to replace those computers," says Bruce Ryon, General Manager and Chief Technology Analyst of the Technology Division of Media Metrix, Inc. "Aggressive pursuers of this market include newcomer Sony, which has the second largest installed base of PCs under one year old - with 277 thousand PCs." *T

About Media Metrix Technology Measurement

The Media Metrix Technology Group provides data from the first ever on-going effort to electronically scan and monitor actual PC usage and ownership in a demographically balanced sample of households. The PCs in these households are equipped with Media Metrix' proprietary, patented PC Meter software, which runs continuously to track real-time PC usage. Media Metrix is the only audience measurement company which tracks and measures all usage activity taking place on the PC, not just on the web. Data collected electronically with the Media Metrix PC Meter is far more reliable than information gathered in surveys, which rely on the respondents' ability to recall or even understand survey questions.

This Media Metrix PC Meter Report Series includes the HardScan(tm) report, which covers hardware ownership, peripheral ownership and branding information data. The SoftScan(tm) reports provide software ownership information - application and system software, and the SoftUsage(tm) reports contain software usage data. Media Metrix also provides Linkage(tm) reports which combine any two of the technology reports or link with Media Metrix' World Wide Web Audience Measurement Reports. Linkage reports provide unique information on the relationships between hardware, software, media, ownership and usage. The PC Meter Report Series is derived from the Media Metrix At Home sample of 28,000 PC users.

Saw Compaq get favorable mention from two of the panelists on Wall Street Week. One said the tech sector was due to come back up soon. They both also mentioned IBM.
