Gateway is on it's way to become a net Portal. I think the move is brilliant.

Only AOL and Yahoo! have made any money as internet portals--and that was after loosing a lot of money for a long time. Excite and Lycos may make money later this year or next year. Lycos has lost so much of their investors' money that they are issuing more stock to stay in business, and their stock price has dropped in recognition of that fact. The income for internet portals is highly dependent on the number of people who visit their sites. They attract visitors by offering services such as news, financial services, and internet search engines. Excite, Lycos, and Yahoo! all got started as search engines on Netscape's home page which was the point of origin for nearly 100% of internet users until Microsoft threw their hat into the ring (Netscape still has over 50% of the users).

If, as you say, Gateway has recognized that they are at the "end of a trend" and decided to go into the internet business to keep their growth up, I feel sorry for Gateway stockholders. Thanks for pointing out a great potential short.

PS: Dell's ASP has been climbing this quarter.

Hey don't forget about Compaq/AltaVista. Can you imagine if AltaVista is the startup page for every Compaq machine sold? AltaVista in the past several months has gone through alot of changes. I expect Compaq will accelerate these changes to transform AltaVista into a comparable portal to the likes of Yahoo and Excite.
