You are very much correct, the soul is very complex to understand.
As an abstract any concept is in the eye of the beholder. Our concept in the western world is the exact opposite of the concept held by the wisdom of the ancients, and was brought about by the advent of Jewish and Roman catholicism religions.

The confusion springs from our conception of a beginning and of time and space. It is generally accepted that soul will exist beyond transition. A living soul does not require matter for it's existence. A mortal soul is merely the immortal soul united with matter.

My contention is that life, as we conceive it, begins with the first breath and leaves it with the last. Since it is unprovable which concept is correct IMHO governments and churches should not interfere.
It should be the mothers choice.
