Reality of Risk, I see that you are new to trading. When a trader says that " I may hold a stock for only one hour sometimes certainly no more than a few weeks or months at the very most ", that usually implies from the date of purchase. So if a trader continues to trade, he could be in and out of a stock multiple times over years. Dell is a good example of a fantastic trading stock. Vivus is another. The requirements for a good trading stock is that they have a high beta (intraday fluctuation) and golly Vivus certainly has had that. I have been trading Vivus uninterruptedly since 5/97.My holding volume has varied from time to time. I increased my position in the last few days' downturn. This modus operandi can be likened to surfing: you continue to go up and down with a stock, as long as you think that the long-term fundamentals are good. This IS a form of investing RR, if you define investing as putting your money into an enterprise (in this case a stock equity) for the purpose of achieving a return. There are different methods of investing. This is one of them. I believe this is different from " the momentum trader ", who jumps on board the first rocket that goes by and jumps off it as soon as it stalls. That is too much of an unknown to me. These guys have given us (traders) a bad reputation, chuckle chuckle. Thus I prefer well-studied stocks, with good fundies and a good beta. Vivus is an example. Newbridge Networks is another. Other stocks that I have delved in from time to time that have met my requirements over time are Intel, Dell, Ascend to name a few. In regards to " only caring about myself ", RR now you are getting iver my head into sociology> If you feel that this thread, the market, has social resposibilities then we need to define them, get everybody to sign on to it etc and get on with it.Somebody in Washington has been trying to do just that for yearsd now and he claims he'll have the solution any time now. All he needs is a little bit more funding, GG. After saying all this RR, if it makes you feel any better, you CAN call me a trader and NOT an investor. I will not be offended. As always semantics sometimes are very subjective (in America), and so we ultimately fall with Carroll Lewis in Alice in Wonderland and the Cheshire cat: " every word means exactly what I want it to mean; nothing more, nothing less ". Cheers and have a good weekend, TA
