MM are only conduits for the real purchasers.
On their own, most are not going to buy 100k shares of anything.
Their job is to make a market, and they do so buy being mostly

From Maxtor's recent Form S-1 filing

"The Company relies on a limited number of leading suppliers for the components used in the manufacturing of its products, including MR heads and head stack assemblies, media, custom integrated circuits ("IC"), read channel ICs, PCBs and motor/baseplate assemblies. In general, the Company seeks to have at least two or three suppliers for each of its component requirements. "
