< Never underestimate IBM >
IBM is the last big animal fight for its survivor. It looks good now on the surface. Lu did a good job with cost cutting et. Look 5 years from now, Wintel will kill them. I mean it. Once Wintel start attack high end machine it's all over.

IBM smarts

My experience of them comes from working with a major mini-computer company back in the old days before the PC. (What should we call it BCPCE---before the common personal computer era) and with obsoleting some of their 2 million dollar products with some of my PC driven software in the early 80's.

I was always impressed by the way their PC guys in marketing in various non-PC divisions would approach a sale with an open mind. Whatever they needed to get that sale would get packaged for the customer. They were right there watching their bigger margin products get trashed by the PC but they were willing to sell the customer the PC solution if it kept the business. IBM can make money with a customer every which way. InTel sells a commodity.

There is always a way to substitute one commodity for another but customer confidence and solution driven expertise can never be turned into a commodity.

Never dismiss or underestimate IBM.
