Any of you golf aficianados know DB's handicap? <<The New York Times, comparing golf scores with corporate financials, concludes that good golfers make the best CEOs. Top on its list is New Jersey's own Melvin R. Goodes of Warner- Lambert, in Morris Heights. He has a not-too-shabby golf handicap index of 11, while his company's three-year shareholder return ranked 85 on a scale of 100. Middle-level duffers from the state are John R. Stafford of American Home Products in Madison (10.9 golf, 58 stock); Ralph S. Larsen of Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick (16.1 and 54); and Lawrence A. Bossidy of Allied Signal in Morristown (12.6 and 51). A close look, however, shows that a few low-handicappers like O'Brien actually may skew the average, because top-ranked execs include several who don't exactly sparkle on the links. On the other hand, all of the lowest-ranked CEOs stink on the links. >>
